Educational objectives
Module: Organic Chemistry
The course is aimed to give equal weight to three fundamental aspects of the study of organic chemistry: reactions, mechanisms and structure. The organization is based on reaction types, so the student can be shown that the despite the large number of organic reactions, a relatively few principles suffice to explain nearly all of them. In addition, the student should have some familiarity with the literature of organic chemistry. The course is specifically tailored to enology students to understand the fundamental processes of biochemistry.
Syllabus
Localized and delocalized chimica bonding. Stereochemistry. Carbocations, carbanions, free radicals. Mechanisms and methods of determining reactions. Acids and bases. Effects of structure on reactivity. Aliphatic nucleophilic substitution ,aliphatic electrophilic substitution, aromatic nucleophilic substitution, free-radical substitution: mechanisms, reactivity, reactions. Aromatic electrophilic substitution: mechanisms, orientation and reactivity, reactions. Addition to carbon-carbon and carbon-hetero multiple bonds: mechanisms, orientation and reactivity, reactions. Eliminations: mechanisms and orientation, reactivity, reactions. Oxidation, reductions and rearrangements: mechanisms, reactions. Literature of organic chemistry. Classification of reactions by type of compound synthesized.
